One of my series of photos documenting the Heathen festivals through still life.
This is Plough Charming, the blessing of the start of the agricultural year. For modern Heathens the plough symbolises all our ambitions and tasks for the year ahead. A model of a plough is often placed on the altar, here an old illustration of a ploughing scene has been used instead.
The godfigure is Frey, the Heathen god of fertility and wealth. The antler tine is a ritual tool often used in ceremonies associated with him.
Plough Charming is based on the English folk customs surrounding Plough Monday celebrated early in the new year. The cutting of the first furrow has doubtless been a time of offerings and prayer since the plough was first invented.
